Basil, My Emotional Support Plant: Tiny Therapist, Silent Confidant, Green Life Coach, Keeper of Secrets, Survivor of Neglect, and Unconditionally Loyal Friend Through Every Crisis and All My Questionable Decisions
Reflections
What inspired you to choose a plant as your emotional support, and how did you feel when you first brought Basil home?
I chose a plant as my emotional support because apparently therapy was too expensive and getting another cat was frowned upon.
When I brought Basil home, I immediately felt responsible for something that cannot talk back, judge my decisions, or ask me to explain why I’m crying in the kitchen.
Basil doesn’t give advice. Basil doesn’t have opinions. Basil just sits there, looking fabulous, photosynthesizing, and silently reminding me that I have responsibilities.
Honestly, bringing Basil home gave me a weird little sense of peace. It’s comforting to have something growing in my home while I’m simultaneously trying to keep my own life from completely falling apart.
So yes, Basil is my emotional support plant. Please respect our privacy during this difficult time.
Can you share a specific moment or crisis where you felt Basil’s presence truly made a difference for you?
The moment I knew Basil was truly there for me was during one of those days when absolutely everything went wrong. I stood in the kitchen, completely overwhelmed, talking out loud about my problems while Basil just sat there silently, judging me with his little green leaves.
I told Basil everything. Work drama, life drama, money drama, the kind of drama where you start questioning every decision you’ve made since birth.
And Basil? Nothing. No advice. No judgment. No “have you tried making better choices?” Just quiet, leafy support.
Honestly, it was exactly what I needed.
That was the moment I realized Basil wasn’t just a plant. Basil was my therapist, witness, emotional support roommate, and the only one in the house legally obligated to stay because I bought him.
10/10 support system. Would recommend.
What are some of the ways Basil has helped you process your emotions or thoughts during tough times?
Basil helped me process my emotions in several important ways.
First, Basil listened without interrupting. No opinions, no unsolicited advice, and absolutely no “maybe you’re overreacting.” Just leaves and silence.
Second, talking to Basil helped me organize my thoughts. I could explain the entire situation out loud and, by the end, realize I was either completely justified or possibly the problem. Basil refused to confirm either theory.
Third, taking care of Basil gave me something positive to focus on. Watering him, checking his leaves, and making sure he had enough sunlight reminded me that even when life feels chaotic, there are still little things I can control.
And finally, Basil taught me patience. He grows slowly, doesn’t demand much, and somehow manages to thrive while I’m over here emotionally held together by caffeine and spite.
Honestly, Basil may not be a licensed therapist, but he has excellent listening skills and absolutely no copay.
How do you think your relationship with Basil has influenced your perspective on self-care or mental health?
My relationship with Basil has taught me that self-care doesn’t always have to be some big, dramatic transformation. Sometimes it’s just remembering to slow down, breathe, and take care of something—even if that something is a plant that has absolutely no idea what’s going on.
Basil has reminded me that growth takes time, consistency, and a little patience. Some days you thrive, some days you look slightly wilted and question all your life choices. And apparently, that’s okay.
Taking care of Basil has made me realize that I deserve that same patience and attention I give him. I can’t expect myself to be perfectly healthy, happy, and put together every day.
So now when life gets overwhelming, I remind myself: water the Basil, take a breath, deal with one thing at a time, and try not to dramatically resign from adulthood before lunch.
Basil has taught me that self-care is less about having everything figured out and more about giving yourself the same grace you give something you’re trying to help grow.
Are there any particular rituals or routines you have developed with Basil that bring you comfort or joy?
Absolutely. Basil and I have developed a very serious wellness routine, because apparently I now have a plant that requires a morning briefing.
Every morning, I check on Basil to make sure he survived the night. I inspect his leaves like I’m conducting a medical examination, rotate him toward the sunlight, and ask how he’s feeling. He never answers, which honestly makes him my best listener.
I also talk to him throughout the day. Sometimes it’s encouragement. Sometimes it’s me explaining my problems. Sometimes it’s just, “Basil, I swear to God, if one more thing happens today…”
Watering Basil has become a form of meditation. I slow down, breathe, and remind myself that I am responsible for keeping another living thing alive. Which is both calming and mildly terrifying.
And before bed, I check him one last time because apparently I am now a helicopter parent to a basil plant.
The best part is that Basil has never once asked me for money, questioned my life choices, or left me on read.
Honestly, this is the healthiest relationship I’ve had in years.
